This table includes counts of unoccupied dwellings and dwellings occupied by foreign residents or temporarily present persons. A similar table was acquired from the 2016 Census: Number of Dwellings by Dwelling Type (7) and Structural Type of Dwelling (11) for All dwellings including unoccupied and dwellings occupied by temporarily present persons or foreign residents, excluding overseas or occupied units in senior's residents, 2016 Census - 100% Data
A private unoccupied dwelling refers to a private dwelling which meets the two conditions necessary for year-round occupancy (a source of heat or power and shelter from the elements), but in which no individual is residing on May 11, 2021. (taken from the Dictionary, Census of Population, 2021)
Private dwelling occupied by foreign residents and/or by temporarily present persons refers to a private dwelling occupied solely by foreign residents and/or by temporarily present persons on May 11, 2021. A temporarily present person of a dwelling is a person who resides there on May 11, 2021, but has a usual place of residence elsewhere in Canada. A foreign resident is a person whose usual place of residence is outside Canada. These dwellings are classified into regular dwellings and occupied marginal dwellings. (taken from the Dictionary, Census of Population, 2021)
The table universe does not include occupied units in a senior’s residence, because this is the only Universe that includes Unoccupied private and Unoccupied Collective dwellings - which was one of the objectives for the table. Although the category Occupied units in a senior’s residence collective is included as a Dwelling type variable in the table, there is no data as the Universe excludes this category.
Counts of occupied units in a seniors residence can be found in these tables:
For the 2021 Census, the number of foreign residents and temporarily present persons was collected for some collective dwellings. Consequently, this change has resulted in the combination of unoccupied collective dwellings and collective dwellings occupied solely by foreign residents or temporarily present persons. Furthermore, it is likely that some collective dwellings that were valid collective dwellings in 2016 were no longer considered operational in 2021 because they were temporarily or permanently closed as an effect of the COVID-19 pandemic. Similar to previous census years, data are disseminated only for collective dwellings occupied by usual residents.
