This product provides the shapefiles for boundaries of downtowns, based on the 2016 Standard Geographical Classification. The boundaries will be revised in 2021, when the Dissemination Areas from the 2021 SGC are finalized. This revised version of the geography will be the one used in the 2021 Census analytical products.

This work would not have been possible without the input and feedback provided by representatives from municipalities which participated in consultations. These consultations generated enthusiasm from municipalities, with over three-quarters of them responding to Statistics Canada' request for assistance.  These consultations yielded important information which helped ensure the delineations were accurate representations of Canada’s downtowns.
