Statistics Canada is pleased to invite you to two free sessions on July 17 and 18 at the Westin Hotel during the ISI World Statistics Congress (WSC) held by the International Statistical Institute.
We are expecting a large turnout of attendees from international academia, national statistical offices, and businesses at the congress and these sessions will be a unique opportunity to be part of an engaging discussion on the importance of disaggregated data at a municipal level within a national statistical framework (first session), as well as an opportunity to find out more about some of the dissemination and geospatial analysis tools now available to help provide better access to disaggregated data from a geographic perspective . Your participation in the two sessions will be of great value!
People who wish to attend do not need to be registered for the main ISI World Statistics Congress conference in order to attend these two free ‘side sessions’. Session 1: Informal discussion with US Bureau of Census Stephen D. Owens
This session will focus on the role of a national statistical organisation with respect to providing municipal statistics, the challenges and lessons learned and ways to promote close collaboration with municipal governments to disaggregate data at that level.

Topics will include:
- The role and value added for a national statistics office (NSO) to contribute to municipal statistics
- Tips on best ways to encourage collaboration on data collection and sharing with NSO, other federal departments, states/provinces, and municipalities
- Promotion of data standards in data collection and compilation
- Tracking information on equity groups at the regional/municipal level, differences between Canadian and US on the approach adopted
- Issues and concerns regarding confidentiality of data and push toward more disaggregated data
About the presenter:
Stephen D. Owens is the Public Sector Specialist in the Economy-Wide Statistics Division of the United States Census Bureau. In this role he coordinates the Census of Governments and its related activities including the Annual State and Local Finance Survey, the Annual Public Employment Survey and various taxation surveys. The Census of Governments identifies the scope and nature of the nation's state and local government sector; provides authoritative benchmark figures of public finance and public employment.
About the moderators:
Anik Lacroix, Assistant Director and Daniel St-Pierre, Section Chief, Public Sector Statistics Division manage the Centre for Municipal and Local Data which disseminates and visualizes municipal financial data, provides municipalities with a self serve standards tool, and coordinates efforts within Statistics Canada to release more data and products at the CSD geography.Session 2: Demonstration on geomatics and disaggregated statistics at municipal level
In this session, the Centre for Municipal & Local Data will present its portal and related data dashboards while other exhibitors will showcase developments in geomatics tools at Statistics Canada and elsewhere.
